Miranda To Cali: Improving Nutrition And Food Security With Beans

As part of a strategy to find new markets for the food produced at Rural Alternative Schools (ERAs), members of the ERA in Miranda have begun participating in the Farmers Gatherings organized by the Secretary of Economic Development of Cali.  Farmers Gatherings are markets where farmers offer environmentally sustainable products to small business owners as well as individual consumers. Thanks to a partnership between PASO Colombia and Harvest Plus, participants from the Miranda ERA are selling biofortified beans. The beans were grown from seeds donated by Harvest Plus and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). The beans are of a particular variety that have been biofortified through conventional plant breeding to increase the nutritional level of micronutrients zinc and iron. These high levels of essential nutrients contribute to enhancing the nutrition of consumers and to food security throughout the region.
